Still photographer Laura Magruder (Force of Nature, The Last Thing He Wanted, Driven, Imprisoned, The Men Who Stare at Goats, Che. Part 1), her husband, daughter and a whole lot of pets are “staying-at-home” in San Juan, Puerto Rico. When she isn’t taking care of her household (including her many plants), she’s looking out the windows, listening to the new sounds of the silent city, observing clear skies, birds replacing airplanes, chirping replacing the sounds of wheels on the tar. Early in May, when the governor “released the valve” a little – she ventured out – shooting interesting images of San Juan safe and silent. She’s started one personal project – working title: Masked Humanity. “It’s simple but it’s meant to bring us a bit closer emotionally, until we can do it physically,” she says. “I’m not sure how it will end but while I’m out there, approaching strangers and asking for permission to photograph them, gives me hope that we will be better. We have to be better.”
